Helping to Rebuild a Library in Oganawa, Japan!

Thanks to the generosity of a Los Altos family, a special library has a great selection of new hardback books on their shelves!

Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Sak Morimoto, a Los Altos resident, met with the school librarian in Oganawa, Japan, discovered a need for high-quality English-language books, and committed himself to help rebuild the library.

The fundraising for this project has been a family effort. Wako Morimoto (now in 7th grade at Blach Junior High), and Toki Morimoto (Loyola 1st grade) raised funds at Loyola Elementary School and Sak and his wife Kumiko have also been receiving contributions on the “Books. Hope.” facebook page. In the spirit of “think global, act local,” they then chose to keep the dollars in Los Altos by making a large purchase at Linden Tree.

When we became aware of this, we were more than happy to contribute to the effort by providing a deep discount to allow for maximum use of the fundraising dollars.

Once again, our stellar booksellers came through with suggestions for a variety of new and classic books, including titles like “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble,” the “Madeleine” series, the Eric Carle collection, and “Where the Wild Things Are” along with many other store favorites.

The family was in Japan over the holiday break to hand-deliver a “We Are Friends” card from students at Loyola, the books to the librarians, and to meet with town officials and politicians (pictured above).

Details about the earthquake and tsunami’s effect in Oganawa

Building with the green roof capsized on its side

The town of Onagawa had approximately 10,000 people before the Tsunami/Quake. They lost about 900 (including those who died and those still missing) which is nearly 10% of the population.

One of the women working for the Town Municipality and who is responsible for administering the library emphasized the importance of books for kids. During the worst period when there was no entertainment or toys to play with, books really encouraged them. Children who lost their mothers in particular were able to access their happy memories of reading together.

To the left is the building where the officials pictured above used to work. They fled to the 5th floor of the building and stayed there for a couple of days. Because the Tsunami water came up to “4th” floor, the inside of the building is totally destroyed.

The local school was already on holiday break when the Morimoto family visited. The school officials promised to take photos with the children and will be sending on to us soon for us to share. We will share pictures and updates as they become available and we continue to be inspired by similar stories throughout our community!

King Jack and the Dragon

Written by Peter Bentley and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury

An irresistible knights-and-dragons fantasy for the very young, in the tradition of Oxenbury’s enduring classic “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.”

Jack, Zack, and baby Caspar spend all day fighting dragons in their homemade fort. But when Sir Zack and Caspar are taken inside for bed, King Jack – alone on his throne – finds himself feeling a bit less brave . . . especially when he hears a thing approaching, a thing with four legs.

A rollicking read-aloud with a charming surprise ending and Helen Oxenbury’s spare, expressive illustrations, this kid-pleaser is a classic in the making.

Peter Yarrow Visit A Big Hit!

pyWow, what a whirwind day at Linden Tree that was! After a wonderful morning with Frans Vischer, we had multiple generations and many families with children of all ages come by last night for music and storytelling by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary fame.

Los Altos Patch was here last night and wrote a wonderful article about the evening.

We definitely enjoyed being able to open up our beautiful front windows so everyone in town could enjoy the music.

Be sure to come by on Friday at 3:30 for Jon J. Muth, illustrator of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind!” And be sure to sign up for our newsletter to make sure you keep up with our events and announcements.

Fun with “Fuddles”

fuddleseventThank you to those who came out Monday morning for a cozy story time with author and illustrator Frans Vischer!

Everyone enjoyed the lovely illustrations and sweet story. We also got to hear what it was like for him to come to the United States as a young child and how he sometimes used his art to communicate.

The children really enjoyed stories about Felix, the real-life cat who inspired the story of Fuddles and what it’s like for Mr. Vischer to be an illustrator and animator for Disney Studios.

And if you bought a book you also got a personalized drawing of Fuddles with your autograph!

Stay tuned to our newsletter and event calendar for other upcoming author, illustrator, and musical events.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

In “The Lost Hero”, three demigods named Jason, Piper, and Leo found themselves at Camp Half-Blood, where they started their quest to find four additional half-blood heroes.

Who are the other four? The answer may lie in another camp miles away, where a new camper has shown up and appears to be the son of Neptune, god of the sea!

With an ever-expanding cast of brave-hearted heroes and formidable foes, this second book in “The Heroes of Olympus” series offers all of the action, pathos, and humor that Rick Riordan fans crave.

Some of our customers say this is even better than the first in the series: what do you think?

Banned Book Week 9/24-10/1

bannedCelebrate Banned Books by reading a frequently banned book, such as “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble” or “To Kill a Mockingbird” or “Harry Potter!”

What does it mean to challenge or ban a book?

It means that some people didn’t like the information or ideas published in these books. They tried to take away the authors’ freedom of speech, and your freedom to read.

Booksellers and librarians support your right to read any book you choose, and especially this week from September 24th through October 1st.

We have a special display in the store; ask a bookseller to recommend their favorite “banned book” this week!

Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

WonderstruckAuthor/illustrator Brian Selznick, whose previous novel, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” was awarded a Caldecott Medal, has hidden a literary game in his highly anticipated new children’s novel, “Wonderstruck.”

Ben and Rose secretly wish their lives were different. Ben longs for the father he has never known. Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook.

When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his mother’s room and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out alone on desperate quests to find what they are missing.

Set fifty years apart, these two independent stories – - Ben’s told in words, Rose’s in pictures — weave back and forth with mesmerizing symmetry.

A perfect gift for an independent reader, Wonderstruck is on the shelves at Linden Tree now and part of the 30% off sale September 29th-October 1st!

Linden Tree Goes International?

mapNo, it’s not a new store announcement, just a story of how a local, independent bookstore can have an impact on multiple continents. Today we received a phone call with a seemingly ordinary request: a customer  purchasing a gift certificate for a friend.

Gift certificates can be used towards anything in the store at any time and never expire, so it’s a popular present for many local families.

The purchaser, however, was calling from Canada, and the recipient is a family who is coming to the area next week from China who was told they simply have to visit Linden Tree when they get here! We can’t wait to meet them and greet them with a surprise shopping spree.

And to our friend to the north, thanks for thinking of us, we appreciate it!
