Several of the top professionals in the book publishing world are coming to Linden Tree to share their top picks for summer reads with YOU! When we attend our own industry conferences, we love to hear them describe their favorite seasonal titles and this event is designed to bring that same experience to our customers.

Come join us at Linden Tree on Thursday, May 16, from 4:30 to 5:30PM for this FREE event during the Los Altos Farmers Market.  Parents, educators, kids and book lovers of all ages are welcome! We would appreciate an RSVP to info@lindentreebooks.com so we can provide enough seats.

Five lucky attendees will have their names drawn for some special giveaways, including a Linden Tree gift certificate.

Celebrating Mom

We have you covered for Mother’s Day: We have wonderful picture and rhyming books like Is Your Mama a Llama by Deborah Guarino (Scholastic), practical how-tos like what you’ll find in Mama’s Big Book of Little Lifesavers by Kerry Colburn (Chronicle), and even simple gifts that lets Mom know you care! Let us take care of wrapping these up for you, too.

Be sure to check out the books for “grown-ups” in the back of the store or ask for a recommendation for a fantastic novel, memoir, travel book, or cookbook!

We also have TWO Picture Book Story Times celebrating mothers this week: Friday and Saturday at 11AM.

Children’s Book Week Poster Contest

It’s not a surprise that we LOVE Children’s Book Week (May 13-19). We  encourage readers to appreciate books for their words AND their artwork!
For all the budding artists out there: if you could design your own page or cover of a book you love, what would it look like?Come on into Linden Tree and submit your drawing in our poster exhibit and contest celebrating Children’s Book Week.

At our “Party for Book Lovers” next Thursday, May 16, the visiting book professionals will be picking out their favorites for some special prizes. You also get to see your work displayed!

Feel free to use the supplies we have in the store or create at home.

Entries are due no later than next Wednesday, May 15.

Children and adults alike were enchanted by author and illustrator Elisa Kleven’s artistic spirit as they entered into the magical world of her books and art at Linden Tree last weekend.

If you missed out on this opportunity, please look out for another visit from Elisa in the Fall. We also have some extra signed copies, so come on in and pick up yours!

Summer Reading Workshops 6th-12th Grades

Your Middle or High School student’s required reading just became a lot more fun…

Let your student choose a book from their Summer Reading List from school or work with a book that they have selected to read.  We will briefly discuss each participant’s book and demonstrate several ways to produce an original product that goes beyond book reports to capture their experience.  Your student will come away with an original and creative piece which expresses their personal reflections on their book.

Cost:  $ 35.00 (includes the price of one paperback book).
Minimum Attendance:  6; Maximum Attendance:  10.

Middle School Workshops will be offered on Wednesday, July 17 and on Wednesday, August 14 from 4-6 pm.

High School Workshops will be offered on Thursday, July 18 and on Thursday, August 15th from 7-9 pm.

Summer Reading Camps K-5

Encourage and inspire your child to keep reading throughout the summer by signing up for one of Linden Tree’s Summer Reading Camps.

Our series of camps are designed to let children choose books from their school reading list, Linden Tree staff recommendations, or by personal selection. Campers will explore favorite titles for their age and grade level and learn about literary elements such as genre, plot, character and setting with age appropriate activities to boost reading, creative writing skills, and, most of all, enjoyment of literature.

Session 1
June 24-28: Kindergarten, 2:00-3:00 pm
June 24-28: 1st and 2nd Grade, 4:00-5:00 pm
July 8-12: 3rd, 4th, 5th Grades, 4:00-5:00 pm

Session 2
July 22-28: Kindergarten, 2:00-3:00 pm
July 29-August 2: 1st and 2nd Grade, 4:00-5:00 pm
August 5-9: 3rd, 4th, 5th Grades, 4:00-5:00 pm

Cost:  $95.00 per child per session for a Monday through Friday camp. Includes one paperback book.

A minimum of 6 children must sign up for each camp, with a maximum attendance of 10. Grade levels are for 2013-2014 school year.

Book Launch & Special Craft: Glasswings by Elisa Kleven

Author and Illustrator Elisa Kleven will be presenting her newest book, Glasswings, at Linden Tree. Please join us for a FREE special story time, author discussion, book signing, and craft time on Saturday, May 4 at 11:00 a.m.!

She has illustrated over 30 picture books including The Paper Princess, Ernst, The Puddle Pail, and Sun Bread. Come to Linden Tree to hear Elisa read from hew newest book about Claire, a glasswing butterfly who becomes lost in the city, but is helped by new city friends. She will demonstrate her unique and whimsical collage art and invite children to participate and make
a picture to take home from the event. This special event is free and open to the public.

Friday, May 3: Richard Bliss, aka “The Game Whisperer,” 6:45-7:30 p.m.- We are pleased to welcome Richard Bliss, AKA “The Game Whisperer” to continue the Screen-Free Week fun! He’ll teach us about some of the hottest games on the market and introduce us to some of the best. This great activity coincides with May First Friday in downtown Los Altos, so drop in for a quick round after dinner or stay & play ’til the end.
