Not only was the Valentine card table a huge success, Linden Tree was thrilled to be the hosts for the performance by the Matsiko World Orphans Choir.

The choir included twenty children from Liberia, Peru and India and told the stories of the lives and cultures of children in third world countries through song and dance.

It was exciting to be the gathering spot for such a festive and moving community celebration and we look forward to more downtown events in the future. We truly appreciate the hard work of Los Altos Forward to continue to encourage residents to frequent downtown businesses!

Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Sak Morimoto, a Los Altos resident, met with the school librarian in Oganawa, Japan, discovered a need for high-quality English-language books, and committed himself to help rebuild the library.

The fundraising for this project has been a family effort. Wako Morimoto (now in 7th grade at Blach Junior High), and Toki Morimoto (Loyola 1st grade) raised funds at Loyola Elementary School and Sak and his wife Kumiko have also been receiving contributions on the “Books. Hope.” facebook page. In the spirit of “think global, act local,” they then chose to keep the dollars in Los Altos by making a large purchase at Linden Tree.

When we became aware of this, we were more than happy to contribute to the effort by providing a deep discount to allow for maximum use of the fundraising dollars.

Once again, our stellar booksellers came through with suggestions for a variety of new and classic books, including titles like “Sylvester and the Magic Pebble,” the “Madeleine” series, the Eric Carle collection, and “Where the Wild Things Are” along with many other store favorites.

The family was in Japan over the holiday break to hand-deliver a “We Are Friends” card from students at Loyola, the books to the librarians, and to meet with town officials and politicians (pictured above).

Details about the earthquake and tsunami’s effect in Oganawa

Building with the green roof capsized on its side

The town of Onagawa had approximately 10,000 people before the Tsunami/Quake. They lost about 900 (including those who died and those still missing) which is nearly 10% of the population.

One of the women working for the Town Municipality and who is responsible for administering the library emphasized the importance of books for kids. During the worst period when there was no entertainment or toys to play with, books really encouraged them. Children who lost their mothers in particular were able to access their happy memories of reading together.

To the left is the building where the officials pictured above used to work. They fled to the 5th floor of the building and stayed there for a couple of days. Because the Tsunami water came up to “4th” floor, the inside of the building is totally destroyed.

The local school was already on holiday break when the Morimoto family visited. The school officials promised to take photos with the children and will be sending on to us soon for us to share. We will share pictures and updates as they become available and we continue to be inspired by similar stories throughout our community!

An irresistible knights-and-dragons fantasy for the very young, in the tradition of Oxenbury’s enduring classic “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.”

Jack, Zack, and baby Caspar spend all day fighting dragons in their homemade fort. But when Sir Zack and Caspar are taken inside for bed, King Jack – alone on his throne – finds himself feeling a bit less brave . . . especially when he hears a thing approaching, a thing with four legs.

A rollicking read-aloud with a charming surprise ending and Helen Oxenbury’s spare, expressive illustrations, this kid-pleaser is a classic in the making.

After a wonderful morning with Frans Vischer, we had multiple generations and many families with children of all ages come by last night for music and storytelling by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, and Mary fame.

Los Altos Patch was here last night and wrote a wonderful article about the evening.

We definitely enjoyed being able to open up our beautiful front windows so everyone in town could enjoy the music.

Be sure to come by on Friday at 3:30 for Jon J.
Everyone enjoyed the lovely illustrations and sweet story. We also got to hear what it was like for him to come to the United States as a young child and how he sometimes used his art to communicate.

The children really enjoyed stories about Felix, the real-life cat who inspired the story of Fuddles and what it’s like for Mr. Vischer to be an illustrator and animator for Disney Studios.

And if you bought a book you also got a personalized drawing of Fuddles with your autograph!

Stay tuned to our newsletter and event calendar for other upcoming author, illustrator, and musical events.

With an ever-expanding cast of brave-hearted heroes and formidable foes, this second book in “The Heroes of Olympus” series offers all of the action, pathos, and humor that Rick Riordan fans crave.

Some of our customers say this is even better than the first in the series: what do you think?
