From bestselling Maggie Stiefvater, a gripping tale of darkness, miracles, and family.
Here is a thing everyone wants:
Here is a thing everyone fears:
What it takes to get one.
Any visitor to Bicho Raro, Colorado, is likely to find a landscape of dark saints, forbidden love, scientific dreams, miracle-mad owls, estranged affections, one or two orphans, and a sky full of watchful desert stars.
At the heart of this place you will find the Soria family, who all have the ability to perform unusual miracles. And at the heart of this family are three cousins longing to change its future: Beatriz, the girl without feelings, who wants only to be free to examine her thoughts; Daniel, the Saint of Bicho Raro, who performs miracles for everyone but himself; and Joaquin, who spends his nights running a renegade radio station under the name Diablo Diablo.
They are all looking for a miracle. But the miracles of Bicho Raro are never quite what you expect.
All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater is fantasy novel, set in the small desert village of Bicho Raro in Colorado in the 1960s, about the Sorias, a family with the gift of bestowing miracles upon the multitudes of people (“pilgrims”) who venture to detach themselves from their darknesses. One day, Daniel Soria, the appointed official saint to perform the miracles, breaks one of the cardinal rules/traditions of being a saint -- he falls in love with and helps a pilgrim, which is a big no because that interferes with the second part of the completion of a miracle and brings darkness upon the saint. As a result, he leaves Bicho Raro as to avoid inflicting darkness upon the rest of his family as well, leaving only a note for his incredibly logical and almost entirely non-emotive cousin Beatriz. This begins a suspense-filled adventure full of challenging moral decisions dealing with fear, logic, and love in a race to save others and oneself. All the Crooked Saints is a page-turner even for those who typically do not read fantasy infused with intriguing culture and numerous storylines, recommended for ages 12 and above. - Aishani
