Is your avid comic/graphic novel reader ready to take the next step and start creating their own comics?
Have them join us on Saturday, May 20 at 11am for our workshop, Let’s Make Funny Comic Strips, led by illustrators Jen de Oliveira and Ruthie Lafond.
In this one-hour, hands-on workshop, artists will focus on what makes a comic funny. We'll start with drawing warm-ups to get your mind and drawing hand ready to play. Then we'll explore how to tell a funny story in just 4 panels. Each artist will create their own 4-panel comic strips using these methods and share in the laughs. This workshop is designed for artists ages 8-12.
The registration fee is $40 and includes a Sunday Haha zine (full of funny 4-panel comics), and a signed copy of Jen de Oliveira’s upcoming graphic novel debut, Reggie: Kid Penguin. (Your copy will be available for pickup after the book’s release date on June 6.)
Jen de Oliveira is a writer, cartoonist, and elementary school teacher from the Bay Area, California. She is the creator of the all-ages webcomic Reggie and the cocreator of Sunday Haha, a free weekly comics newsletter for kids. Her graphic novel debut, Reggie: Kid Penguin, is coming out this June... and you can pre-order it from Linden Tree!
Ruthie Lafond is an illustrator and member of SCBWI and co-founded the children’s illustration blog Pen & Oink, where she has interviewed numerous notable illustrators since 2012. She also runs the Illustrator Spotlight at Linden Tree, a rotating monthly display celebrating children’s book illustrators. You can find her comic strip Nutty Conversations in Sunday Haha every Sunday.
