In this semi-autobiographical YA graphic novel, a trans teen navigates Catholic school, confusing crushes, and coming out.
It’s 1993 in rural New Jersey and closeted trans girl Heather is on her way to a Halloween party, dressed like Belle from Beauty in the Beast. After being taunted for being “a dude in girl’s clothing” at the party, Heather vows to remain in the closet and stop doing anything girly. Instead, Heather tries to focus on her friendships. But things get even more confusing when Heather starts developing crushes on her friends Jason and Paula.
As Heather navigates her gender identity, experiments with letting people see who she really is, and dips her toe into the dating world, she slowly finds the courage and community that she needs to be herself—no matter what other people might think.
