Unwrap the delicious story of chocolate: from the heart of the rainforest through the grand civilizations of Mesoamerica to the tables of modern-day chocolate lovers.

Chocolate Unwrapped reveals the fascinating history of chocolate from its sacred beginnings as a ceremonial drink to its transformation—through colonization and industrialization—into a global commodity enjoyed around the world.

With vibrant illustrations, fun facts, and a decolonized perspective, this book explores how cacao is grown, how it’s processed into chocolate, and how cultures across the globe consume and celebrate it. Readers will also discover the mood-boosting chemistry behind chocolate and the jobs that keep the chocolate industry thriving. Chocolate Unwrapped invites readers to explore the cultural, environmental, and scientific story behind one of the world’s favorite fruits—and how we can shape a more sustainable (and tasty) future.

About the Author

Alexandria Scott-Christensen loves the thrill of research as much as she enjoys writing. Based in the Washington DC area, she spends most of her time abroad with her husband and four kids. Said four children inspire her love of writing and children's literature. She is also a self-proclaimed faux-naturalist and feels most at home in nature pretending to be Jane Goodall.

Yoko Baum, a Japanese illustrator based in Portland, Oregon, boasts extensive experience in the industry. Armed with a BFA from art university, she dedicated several years to the children's books sector. Today, her passion lies in editorial, advertising, and publishing illustration. When not immersed in her craft, Yoko finds joy in cooking and baking for her sons, summer hikes, and occasional winter knitting, weaving nature's abundance into vibrant 2D visuals.
