Ages 7 to 9

Introducing a charismatic, new illustrated chapter-book star reminiscent of Alvin Ho and Dory Fantasmagory, who is sure to delight young readers with her infectious humor and relatable gripes -- the second book in the Lian Song series!

Lian Song has a new car.

Well actually, her Dad has a new car. Except . . . Cough! Bang! Screeeech! This car may be a piece of junk! Which is tragical, because there’s so much you can’t do without a car. You can only walk or bike so far. Without a car, the world is just . . . smaller. But her big brother, Kai, doesn’t see it that way. He thinks the car is awesome and recruits Lian and their siblings to help Dad repair it.

And Dad’s timing is page-perfect. Miss Maisie the librarian gave Lian a journal to put stories into. But she didn’t have any stories! Because the Songs never go anywhere! Until now. A new car means new places, possibilities, adventures!

But as the Song family struggles to find the right car parts, and Dad has to leave again for work, will Kai be able to accept he can’t fix everything? And how will Lian find an epic adventure to write about in her journal?

Through Lian’s adventures, Kristen Mai Giang celebrates working-class kids and one family’s first-generation Chinese-American experience, striving to make their way in a new culture.
