The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking

Astrid Lindgren was born in 1907 and grew up at a farm called Nӓs in the south of Sweden. Her first book was published in 1944, followed a year later by Pippi Longstocking. She wrote thirty-four chapter books and forty-one picture books that have all together sold over 160 million copies worldwide. Her books have been translated into over a hundred different languages, and according to UNESCO’s annual list, she is the eighteenth most translated author in the world.

She created stories about Pippi, a free-spirited red-haired girl, to entertain her daughter, Karin, who was ill with pneumonia. The girl’s name, Pippi Longstocking, was in fact invented by Karin. Astrid Lindgren once commented about her work, “I wrote to amuse the child within me and can only hope that other children may have some fun that way, too.”

Bailey Sullivan is a Texas-raised illustrator based in Richmond, Virginia. Her work aims to reinterpret the ordinary through bright colors, symmetry and simple shapes. Bailey’s work is inspired by European folk art and typically features florals and other elements of nature. Although she is primarily focused on digital illustration, she also expresses her work through murals, painted canvas, textiles, and other tangible media.

Her work has won multiple awards, including recognition from Art Directors Club and DIELINE.
